Making time for conversation at work

Making time for conversation at work

Mondays for me are about conversation with people in the office. It's about sharing what we got up to over the weekend which can lead to finding a common interest or two  or similarly, the lack thereof,, as demonstrated by future awkward silences in the tea room! I came across Smart Casual Matthew deep in conversation with Corporate/Polished Aaron in a rather European-looking part of South Yarra. Business Chic men in conversation Business Chic Matthew red tie Business Chic Aaron Business Chic men on smart phone Business Chic Aaron rings I've been meaning to write Matthew and Aaron for the details of their outfits. However I like that the focus in these photos is on a conversation and vibe. This conversation was interrupted by a phone call but I find it interesting how these days face-to-face conversations ebb and flow with little breaks for checking social media or taking other calls... If you want to know the details of what Matthew and Aaron, don't fret -when I write them to let them know that I've published these photos I will ask for the details of what they are wearing as I've been told that "there is nothing more annoying than liking an outfit and not knowing where the pieces are from!" But for now, I'll leave you to think about the conversation they are having (caption contest, anyone?! ) and reflect upon the nature of conversations that you have in your workplace. Happy Monday, BusiChics!

Maybelle Imasa-Stukuls calligraphy class at The School

Why take a lesson in the art of calligraphy in this day and age of typing and texting? Well I don't know about you, BusiChic, but I like writing with a pen. Scrawling with a Sharpie is one of my favourite things. In primary school I loved the writing practice that we did to earn the much coveted pen licence and I was so disappointed at how those lessons stopped once those pens were earned! And  I've always wanted to try and learn Chinese calligraphy; the meditative nature of sweeping brush strokes appeals to me. So when I read about Maybelle Imasa-Stukuls calligraphy masterclass at The School (run by the magnificent Megan Morton who you must find on instagram @megan_morton ) on The Design Files, well my heart skipped a beat. Luckily I managed to get a spot in Maybelle's final class in Melbourne so here is a wee photo diary of this WONDERFUL evening with Maybelle, Megan and The School. business chic maybelle imasa-stukuls the school cheryl lin #maybelleattheschool maybelleattheschool maybelle imasa-stukuls the school megan morton the school firecrackerevent scones firecracker event lady bagels business chic maybelle imasa-stukuls Things I loved about Maybelle's class at The School:
  • Photographing Maybelle and Megan before class started. So wonderful to get to spend time with wondrous kick-ass women women and their awesome energy. I'm finding this especially inspiring as I take the next frightful-delightful steps after life in Finance...
  • Stepping into The Establishment Studios - a beautiful space that Megan styled breathtakingly so to make hearts sing and featuring flowers by Phil aka @afloralfrenzy -  heaven!
  • "Lady bagels" (perfect bagels but bite-sized!) and other morsels by the delightful Cassie at Firecracker Event
  • Great conversations and laughter followed by some of the most utterly perfect and productive silences as we practiced our calligraphy under Maybelle's tutelage.
BLISS. I wanted to hug everyone in the room! I'm looking forward to spending time sitting by the window, practicing my calligraphy and penning notes and greetings to loved ones. busichic note to dadMy first "calligraphy" note to my Dad - soooo sad :( Hugs to everyone in the class and thank you wonderful Maybelle and Megan for bringing your magic to Melbourne! xx If you like this post, go swoon over Maybelle's website: www.may-belle.com or check out The School which is based in Sydney but *sometimes* has classes in Melbourne. Are you having a kick-ass week?

CLASH-TASTIC creative: Lisa Marie Corso

I first came across today's BusiChic on Instagram and felt like I got to know her so well through her instas that when we first met I asked if I could hug her. True story. Lisa Marie Corso is a Creative working as the Editorial Coordinator at The Design Files / TDF Open House Project Manager  plus somehow manages to do freelance writing / copywriting on the side- whoa, I must ask her whether she is an early-birder or night owl in order to get this all done! Lisa Marie  was also in the magical calligraphy class that I went to earlier this week and allowed me to push her into place so that I could capture some of her cuteness (OMG!) and all of her clashtastic print goodness. Enjoy!! Creative Lisa Marie Corso Accessories
Lisa Marie wears:
Glasses from Funky Spex (the word 'funky' though kind of freaks me out)
Patent leather boots from Zensu
Laptop case from Eley Kishimoto
Bag from a bag store in Essendon, I saw the bag in the window of my local strip of shops from this unassuming bag shop and had to have it (don't know the name sorry)
Spring bangle from Kinki Gerlinki

Get to know Lisa Marie Corso

What are your favourite things to have for lunch on a work day?
Lucy* and I are obsessed with having salad with some type of protein on the side. On high rotation in the salad-sphere at the moment is either my roasted fennel, orange, olive and mint salad or Lucy's two-type cabbage salad with parsley and roasted eggplant with a tahini dressing. No Vegemite on Saladas for us. Sometimes we will get Hellenic Republic's famous $12 takeaway lunchbox on a Friday, which is a three-course Greek mystery lucky dip lunch. You don't know what the day's offering will be until 11.55am on a Friday when Hellenic Republic announce it on Facebook, usually by about 12.15pm it has completely sold out. In Brunswick it is a coveted and sometimes unattainable lunch. Is it a myth or is it real? Sorry to ruin the mystique, but after woofing down that three-course meal and entering a food coma utopia several times, I can attest it is 100% real. //That's Lucy of The *AMAZING* Design Files blog
Your favourite publications (online & off)
Besides The Design Files, my other favourite online publications are VultureHuffington Post and reading The Daily Mail's celebrity gossip section a week after the stories were originally published to see what ended up being factual reporting. Surprisingly when 80% of the content is commenting on Katie Holmes/Kate Bosworth/Jessica Alba's favourite brand of boyfriend jeans the level of defamatory controversy is minimal, but hey, at least I have an encyclopaedic knowledge on where to buy denim from. Print wise I like the new Miss VogueYen and Sunday Style, but probably read books more on a whole over a glossy. I live by the doctrine of Nora Ephron, and love David Sedaris. I just finished reading Piper Kerman's Orange is the New Black which was amazing.
Best advice you've received?
Avoid energy vampires! An energy vampire is someone who sucks all the good vibes out of you, kind of like a Debbie Downer of the Twilight era. Basically someone who leaves you feeling like you need to be plugged into an IV drip of Gatorade to get your energy levels restored. I hate Gatorade, especially the blue kind, so I need to avoid the energy vampire at all costs.
//OMG SO TRUE!
* How do you wind down after a long day?
It is no secret that I LOVE television. On the cusp of going to bed in an effort to relax I will binge on a few hours of television. By a few hours I mean it's most likely that I have actually entered a TV watching vortex, and depending on how many episode cliffhangers have seduced me will end falling asleep at1-2am. I need to be up-to-date with all of my favourite shows or I'll feel anxious. I kind of have an invisible roster in place (writing it down would be too shameful) to manage this debilitating obsession, the same way my nonna has a pillbox to manage which vitamins she has to take on which weekday. Right now I am loving Survivor: Blood vs WaterIt's Always Sunny in Philadelphia and The Mindy Project.
// Thank you, Lisa Marie for allowing me feature your cuteness!
If you are on instagram, Lisa Marie is lisamariecorso -I can't wait to see all of the behind-the-scenes from this year's TDF open house!

Edward Steichen and Art Deco Fashion Exhibition at NGV Melbourne

Regular readers of BusinessChic may recall that I photographed NGV Assistant Curator, Fashion and Textiles, Paola di Trocchio earlier this year. Paola mentioned the Edward Steichen and Art Deco exhibition that she was working on which just opened last Friday! Featuring over 200 photos by photographer Edward Steichen and some 40 pieces from the Museum's own collection of Art Deco fashion, you can imagine my excitement at being invited to the opening held the night before; here are my highlights:

 Edward Steichen

The 1920s saw the development of the ‘modern woman’; a chic, sophisticated woman who engaged in the new dance styles and all kinds of outdoor activities, a woman who worked, voted and lived a life outside of the home. - NGV Melbourne media material
Edward Steichen was chief photographer for the highly influential fashion magazines published by Conde Nast, Vanity Fair and Vogue creating beautiful images that captured the glamour of the era. While I unfortunately missed out on a tour led by current Vogue editor, Edwina McCann, and Paola Di Trocchio - it was not difficult to gain an appreciation for Steichen's photography. I was drawn to his portraits; taking in his composition and  representation of his subjects which included society ladies as well as famous actors such as Charlie Chaplin, Greta Garbo and Marlene Dietrich. However it was one candid-seeming portrait of Mexican-American actress Amida that captured my attention, showing her mid-dance - she looks positively radiant as if the joy of her work is lighting up her whole being. As a budding photographer, it inspires me to want to try and capture that joy in my subjects, as a worker it makes me want to find that kind of work for myself!

Art Deco Fashion

I took lots of photos of the fashion component of the exhibition but have decided not to post all of them; you simply must get to this exhibition in person to take in the exhibits for yourself! For example the " tippet and muff made out of acid green and black monkey fur" Paola mentioned has all of the wow factor that Lady Gaga could hope for! The thing that struck me the most about the fashion component is how vibrant and colourful many of the pieces are; reminding me that this is probably because I've only ever seen black & white photos of the era. Which is funny considering that this is when Chanel created the Little Black Dress- but in amongst all of the colourful garments, it actually becomes clear why this was so revolutionary- yes there was a time where wearing black was to be brave and different! I hope that the above image gives you an idea of the glamour of the period and the intricacy of the work involved; both by the original designers as well as by the textiles team at NGV who painstakingly repaired these delicate garments. In Gallery magazine (which I believe that you can pick up from the NGV gift shop), there's a wonderful piece describing some of the work that Bronwyn Cosgrove, Senior Conservator, Textiles - oversaw to repair and prepare these pieces for public display.

Angie Rehe art deco beach pyjamas

Angie Rehe

It was so wonderful to find fashion illustrator Angie Rehe making studies of some of the fashion pieces - how chic are these "beach pyjamas"? Seriously, I'd love a pair myself! Angie was responsible for the illustrations throughout my book, The Little Black Dress Project Book. I am so excited to hear that on top of running her very popular fashion illustration classes, The Drawing Salon, Angie is now also illustrating for Elle Australia and Harpers Bazaar Singapore - ooh la la! NGV Edward Steichen Art Deco Fashion Exhibition launch

Upcoming events

There are a number of upcoming events that support the Edward Steichen and Art Deco Fashion exhibition. Hear about the conservation techniques and how these works came into the NGV Melbourne collection from Bronwyn Cosgrove, Senior Conservator, Textiles and Paola Di Trocchio, exhibition co-curator and Assistant Curator, Fashion and Textiles or take an Art Deco tour of Melbourne - the iconic Manchester Unity Building which is now owned by Smile Solutions are also offering private tours led by Dr Kia Pajouhesh, founder and managing director of Smile Solutions.  Click here for a list of all upcoming events related to the Edward Steichen and Art Deco Fashion exhibition.   If you are interested in portrait photography and glamorous fashion from the era where women started their public lives, outside of the home, then you simply must make sure that you visit the Edward Steichen and Art Deco Fashion exhibition - on now until March 2, 2014. Many thanks to NGV Melbourne for having me as their guest!

Glamour: from the race track to the office

Spring in Melbourne means the Spring Racing Carnival where ladies and gents alike get dressed in their finest and go have a punt on the horses. It is a fun time for socialising and networking with lots of businesses cutting deals in amongst the marquees. It is also an extremely lucrative for retailers; I read recently that label Camilla and Marc create a special range of frocks especially for the races- that's how much demand there is for racewear ensembles. However I am a big believer in pieces that last beyond the one occassion (where possible) which is why I recently wrote a piece for Women's Agenda on the racewear pieces that can double as workwear.

So you can imagine how excited I was when I came across Jessica  on her way to the races at Caulfield. Her outfit could easily be  mixed and matched with classic basic pieces for the Business Casual (also called Contemporary Business Wear ) office. Pair the brocade top with a smart pair of work pants or that skirt with a smart knit for a glam workwear update. Racewear Jessica Hendrick

5 minutes with Jessica Hendrick

I work for the fashion label victor alexandre as the sales and marketing manager. My favourite work and travel piece is the city singlet dress by victor alexandre, I layer it with everything and it packs down to nothing!
My must have cosmetics/skin care for the office would have to be Kiehls creamy avocado eye treatment to wake up my eyes and Garnier BB cream for speedy lightweight coverage. A coral lippy never goes astray either!
Favourite work lunch would have to be homemade brown rice sushi rolls with spicy tuna and avocado filling. That or a homemade Mexican bean salad with lots of chilli and coriander! Yum!
And finally I love the races because it's a chance to dress up and drink champagne in the sun with my girlfriends!
Thanks Jess! If you enjoyed this post, you might like to see other BusiChic race attendees I've photographed over the last few carnivals! Are you going to the races? What are you going to wear?

Pearls and all of the polka dots

Greetings BusiChic! Did you have a good weekend? I managed to make it to the wonderful Semi Permanent conference on Saturday. It was a great line-up of creatives talking about the evolution of their work including finding the balance between paying the bills doing corporate work and pursuing art for themselves. Interesting stuff- thanks to Oli Sansom for my ticket! Anyhow it made me realise how much I have been hanging out with and featuring creative / corporate-come-creative folk of late that it's probably time I feature an office worker! So without further ado, here is the style of Leonie who works in HR, and completely rocks polka dots.

Business Chic Leonie Boyd

Leonie Boyd detail

Leonie works in the Finance industry so I like how she manages to show her personality through her workwear. Particularly, I appreciate how Leonie has layered THREE different polka dot prints and then accessorised with pearl earrings and an oversized bracelet that echoes the print. Then thrown in a playful pink work bag into the mix- such fun. That the playful bag can be left at the desk, means that the palette of this ensemble is actually quite conservative, hence the reason why Leonie is able to work the fun prints and accessorising. Capiche?

Melbourne in Fashion Meagan Harding Cheryl Lin I believe that it is so important to surround oneself with like-minded positive people who have a great attitude to life, interests and passions and like making things. Lilli Pascuzzi of Frocks and Frou Frou

I'm currently exploring the extent to which I can streamline my workwear and "play" wardrobes because ultimately I'd rather spend a little bit more on fewer pieces that I LOVE and will thus get lots of wear out of and feel happy whenever I get to wear them, than lots of items that will languish unloved in the depths of my closet. So enter the delightful Lilli Pascuzzi of Frocks and Frou Frou who I met recently at a Bursaria High Tea event that I was invited to. We were discussing her gorgeous ensemble, particularly the wonderful petticoat detail on her skirt from Chitra's Closet, when Lilli let slip that this ensemble was something that she would wear to work. Lilli likes being a little bit dressed up for her Creative/Smart Casual workplace; an approach that I am completely inspired by and boy do I think that she makes it look great - check it out:   Business Chic Frocks and Frou Frou Lilli Pascuzzi Business Chic Frocks and Frou Frou Lilli Pascuzzi earrings Business Chic Lian Pascuzzi hart matters bag Business Chic Frocks and Frou Frou Lilli Pascuzzi Chitras Closet Lilli's outfit details: The top is from Modcloth, the skirt was one of Chitra’s Closet. The shoes are from Wittner, and the bag I bought as part of a Kickstarter program from a company called "The Hart Matters”   Job title and employer? What industry do you work in? I work as the Field Sales Manager for the Australian publishing company Hardie Grant Books. Favourite stores/brands for workwear? It’s not a particularly corporate environment, so I get to wear what I would normally. I do a lot of my shopping online these days at places like Asos (doesn’t everyone!), Dorothy Perkins, or one-off originals from Etsy. Your must-have piece/s for workwear? Comfortable flat shoes! When I’m not in the office I’m trekking around city streets with a rolling suitcase full of book samples, and negotiating stairs, cobblestones and tram tracks in anything higher than a kitten heel is downright nerve-wracking! Favourite quote? Find a job you love & you’ll never work a day in your life. I’m lucky to be in that position. Offline/online publications that inspire you? I read a lot of fashion blogs (and write my own!) and get a lot of inspiration from them Frankie Magazine is a guilty pleasure for me, too, though I’m hardly their target demographic Favorite skin care/cosmetics for the office? I’m so lazy with cosmetics! I wear a BB cream (at the moment I’m loving the Signature wrinkle filler BB cream from Missha) and a swipe of lippy (Loreal’s “Infallible Rouge 10-hour) in Always Apricot) and that’s about all I have time for! I do get my eyelashes tinted regularly, since I’m a disaster at applying mascara. Favorite work lunch? My office is right near Top Paddock in Richmond, so you’ll often find me there during lunchtimes. Or if the weather’s nice I’ll trek down to Tivoli Bakery for a sandwich, and a cheeky Dossant. Early bird or night owl? Neither? I’ll go to bed early, but often I’ll read until the small hours, and I’m dreadful in the mornings! What do you pack for a work trip? You know what I don’t pack? Pyjamas. I forget them every time.   // What great responses, thanks Lilli! For more of  Lilli's style, check out her wonderful blog, Frocks and Frou Frou and she is also on Twitter.com/frocksandfroufrou, Facebook (Hey note for Lilli!: go to facebook.com/username to secure your unique URL!) and Instagram.com/lillipilli1978 I've categorised Lilli's ensemble as Polished as it transitions well from her work-to-drinks. How do you streamline your work and play wardrobes or dress so that you can head out straight after work? Stay tuned for more photos tomorrow from our High Tea at Bursaria!

Chitra's Closet at Bursaria Fine Foods High Tea

If you are looking for an occassion to get dressed up for, I simply must tell you about the Bursaria Fine Foods A Touch of High Tea with a Twist that is held on the last Sunday of every month. After recently getting engaged, Tim and I were invited to experience the High Tea at Bursaria Fine Foods at the Abbotsford Convent. It was a gorgeous afternoon of champagne, mingling with dolled up guests, a ladylike fashion show held by the vibrant Chitra's Closet, finished up with delightful fingerfood (sorry I gobbled this before snapping with my proper camera) and sweet high tea treats. Here are my photos from the day to whet your appetites!

The Design Files Open House - the outfits post

Happy Monday, BusiChics!

Did you make it over to The Design Files Open House over the weekend?

I took my own advice and visited the house a few more times since my earlier post on what Lucy and the team were wearing in the Melbourne home!

More outfits at TDF OH 2013

Following on from checking out the team in their chic stripes (stay tuned Sydney for bright and colourful outfits - someone send me a pic?!), there were so many great outfits visiting the home! In my first post, I had described the TDF OH team's stripes as being the kind of outfit to wear at home - comfortable but stylish enough to receive friends who drop by - well, lots of friends certainly dropped by the house over its four days and here's a look at some of the outfits I braved up to snap!

TDF OH in Sydney!

If you are in Sydney, keep an eye out for The Design Files Open House that Lucy and team are putting on in Surry Hills, December 5-8th! For details visit: http://www.thedesignfilesopenhouse.com/visit/ #tdfopenhouse
